Don Rey Mexican Restaurant #1: Authentic Mexican Flavors in Houston

I stopped in for lunch with my son. We were seated promptly. Chips and salsa almost beat us to the table. The hot was really good. The mild was watery with little flavor. I ordered a shrimp quesadilla and a side of rice. My son got the chicken fajitas. He said his was good. Mine was soso. A real let down. Usually real good food.

I had an excellent experience. I have dietary restrictions and knew what I wanted but didn't know how to get it out of the menu. Trey was incredibly helpful and very accommodating. I practically licked my plate clean because it was everything that I wanted with nothing that I didn't the perfect amount of flavor spice and creaminess. All served in a very short period of time so that I could get back to work. If I could give them 10 stars they would have it.

Our food came out super fast and everything tasted good.

The food was OK. I got a steak chimichanga, it was good. The Chile relleno, is not a real chili relleno in my opinion. There is a tiny sliver of a chili, with meat and cheese on top of it on a plate. It also tasted like it was old. The taco salad, beans and rice, and the salsa was good. My husband got the dinner, combo, special, and that was also very bland. The tostada doesn’t have any meat on it. The service was OK. Unfortunately, the guy was really overwhelmed because he had multiple tables by himself. We ordered an appetizer and when we asked about it, he said he was going to bring it out with our meal. We also had to ask three times for lemon for the water. I think it was the owner that checked us out in the front, he was super nice and helpful.

We have been coming to Don Rey for years. We adore Maria (& her family). Every time we walk in the door, we are greeted like family. It’s a great family environment and I appreciate so much that every time we are there, I never have to be concerned about other patrons using ugly language or being inappropriate. Don Rey is one of those local places where you know your kids can go have lunch or dinner and be watched out for (and know that Maria will watch out for them like a Mama or an Aunt). Obviously the food is great (try the guapo special!!) but local, family places are too few and far between and I am so glad the Matas have such a great place in Boiling Springs.

I know, why only 4 stars? Because this is not the absolutely most fabulous Mexican Restaurant I can conceive. That said, this is where I and my family go for Mexican food. It has never let us down. Good food, friendly people, nice atmosphere, reasonable prices. Could it be better? Sure, nothing is perfect. IMHO they don't need to change a thing. This is a great place to eat!

It's the best whole fish ever, crispy outside and juice inside - just add lemon or lime, on the side you can choose rice or beans , it's going with some salad and veggies. That's a big amount for one person, it's gonna be enough to feel happy at the end . We often visit this place just for fish !!! I love fish !!!

Working out of town and stopped in for dinner and so glad I did. One of the best Burritos I have ever eat ... or half... Im stuffed and ready for a nap now lol If you love Big Portions and Authentic Flavors this is the spot.
